TomboyX, a women’s clothing and accessories brand with a focus on tomboy style, sought to revamp their brand strategy and create a more inclusive and empowering message for their target audience. This case study outlines the thought process, goals, and methods used in transforming TomboyX's business through brand strategy.
Situation Analysis:
The founders of TomboyX came to us because they felt the business was lacking in emotion, vision, and a clear connection to their audience. The brand needed a comprehensive strategy that would embody its values and enable the brand to reach a broader audience - people who believe in inclusivity, expressing their authentic selves, and embracing the spirit of the “tomboy.”
Objective:
Our mission was to create a new brand position and strategy for TomboyX that champions self-expansion, inclusivity, and creative personal expression, while dismantling stereotypes and challenging assumptions— enabling the brand to open the aperture of its appeal and reaching a broader audience.
Strategic Recommendations:
- Embrace the power of 'X': We explored the multiple meanings and interpretations of 'X' to convey fluidity, complexity, individuality, and inclusivity. 'X' became a symbol of possibility and personal meaning, allowing people to fill in the blank for themselves.
- Develop a Brand Code: We formulated a brand code that would serve as a filter for all creative decision-making. The code included Identity, Contribution, Cultural Need, and Expression, encompassing tangible and emotional benefits for the audience.
- Create a movement: We aimed to start a movement with TomboyX by focusing on the importance of dialogue and solidarity. The brand would act as a vessel for the voices of people who embody its values, transcending race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and other classifications.
- Transform the mission statement: We crafted a new mission statement for TomboyX that was heavy on emotion and vision, emphasizing the brand's commitment to empowering individuals and fostering a sense of community. The new mission statement read: "TomboyX is on a mission to empower individuals by providing products that communicate a way-of-life and create a movement driven by passion, identity, and community."
- Leverage the power of stories: Recognizing that most brands talk about storytelling but rarely engage in authentic dialogue, we decided to focus on sharing real stories of people who embody TomboyX's values. These stories would come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, showcasing the brand's commitment to inclusivity and solidarity.
